Brief presentation of the institution

Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Oncology (SHATO) The SHATO is only one of the oncology hospitals network in Bulgaria. It was established in the early fifties of the last century. In a document by the Ministry of Health dated 1951. Is a scientific center for research and development in the field of experimental oncology .Center for undergraduate training of students in Medicine and other fields. Postgraduate specialty education and CME courses for various medical and nonmedical professionals dealing with oncology patients. As the natural successor of the National Oncology Centre, our hospital has the leadership in organizing and coordinating the rest of Oncology centers in Bulgaria by providing them with strategy, methodology and expertise, and controlling their effectiveness in oncology patient management.

Unique medical equipment at SHATO:
Multislice computer tomograph and a Mobile x-ray unit for screening of barest cancer (Imaging Department);
Entirely automated device for microbial identification and definition of antibiotic sensitivity VITEK 32; a device for express diagnostics of blood microorganisms “Vastek 9050” (Microbiological Lab);
The only linear accelerator using multi-leaf collimator, brachytherapy equipment using automatic post-loading and energy dose “Microsellectron”,
Tele-gamma-therapeutic equipment using a verifying system and electronic control, an integrated conventional radio-therapeutic system, x-ray simulator and a computer planning system (Department of Radiotherapy);
A device for immune-histochemical diagnostics “Ventana” (Tumor Pathology Department) etc.
