Brief presentation of the institution

The MRI Research Group at The Advanced Technology Center of Sheba Medical Center, headed by Prof Mardor, focuses on brain research with special emphasis on pre-clinical and clinical drug delivery to the brain, brain tumors and brain MR imaging. The hospital setup, enabling pre-clinical/clinical research, close access to physicians and patients, and close collaboration with the industry, forms an optimal environment for translational medical research, which is the nature of most of the groups research projects.

Main Electroporation related topics

 The main interest of our group is the application of electroporation for the treatment of brain tumors. We explore the phenomena of blood brain barrier disruption induced by electroporation both in vitro and in vivo using MRI. We study electrochemotherapy (ECT) and gene therapy of brain tumors and the effect of electroporation on the immune system.
Our lab is also engaged in developing electrodes and electrodes setups for inducing a combined reversible and irreversible electroporation in a minimally invasive manner. Animal experiments and numerical models for spatial distribution of electrical fields are used for this goal.
As one of the main focuses of our lab is MRI, we are investigating advanced imaging methods for electroporation.

Research topics, techniques and equipment not related to Electroporation

Research is also dedicated to:
-Drug delivery into the brain/tumor (including convection-enhanced drug delivery for molecules/nano-carriers, various methods for BBB disruption, real-time MRI monitoring of BBB disruption, drug distribution, MRI depiction of early/late toxicity and more)
-Unique MRI methods for differentiating tumor from treatment effects (such as radiation necrosis)
-Unique MRI methods for depiction of subtle BBB disruption (for example in stroke or following various treatments)

Brief information on available facilites

he Advanced Technology Center occupies over 2000 m2 with biological, optical, computers and MRI-based laboratories. The interdisciplinary team includes biologists, chemists and physicists with vast experience in applied medical sciences and a wide range of collaborations within Sheba Medical Center and with other hospitals, academic institutions and pharma/medical device industries in Israel and abroad.
Also available in our institution are: wet bench space for molecular neurobiology, biochemistry and immunocytochemistry including fluorescent and light microscope, A fully equipped tissue culture room, ELISA microplate readers, real-time PCR machine, centrifuges, Western blots (WB) apparatus, liquid nitrogen storage and -80C freezers.
