Brief presentation of the institution

The Department of Science della Sanità Pubblica e Pediatriche is composed by sveral academic disciplines, such as Hygiene, Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Medical Statistic, Nursing Sciences, Pediatrics, Child Neuropsychiatry, Industrial and Forensic Medicine that cover a broad soectrum of activities in the field of Prevention and Public Health. In particular, the laboratory of Environmental Hygiene carries out research activities on drinking water, air pollution, risk assessment and management of hazardousb waste and wastewater, food hygiene and microbiology.

Main Electroporation related topics

In the Department is performed the supervision of the activity carries aout with the PEF instrument of DiSIT (University of Piemonte Orientale "A. Avogadro"-UPO). The aim of the sudy is to evaluate the bacterial inactivation using Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) in relation to different parameters such as initial bacterial concentration in liquid media and mixing during PERF treatment.The experiments are performed in the DiSIT (University of Piemonte Orientale "A. Avogadro" using different microrganisms (E. coli O157:H7, Listeria and S. aureus).

- PEF system (located at the DiSIT) able to treat small volumes of static liquid that it is built and tested in the DiSIT laboratories

- Laboratory of Microbiology provided with different incubators and biological safety cabinets with laminar flow rate

Research topics, techniques and equipment not related to Electroporation

Part of the research is dedicated to the analysis and prevention of chemical and biological hazards in different environment (water, air, food), to the evaluation of ecotoxicity (eg Microtox, Daphnia magna) and genotoxicity (eg Ames test, Comet assay) in different matrices, to human biomonitoring of environmental pollutants.
